EMILIAN’S SPIDERMAN-PRINCESS-PARTY

It was a warm Monday morning on the last week of May and I was still running around the city on the hunt of some more Spiderman and princess style decorations. Emilian had strictly demanded a Spiderman-Princess party some weeks before his 5th birthday and he didn’t hesitate about it for a second. The challenge was set. While running my business, I had to prepare Emilian’s 5th birthday party and make sure everything was ready in time. Oh, here we go again: The art of finding your balance between work and private life…

The truth: Of course, nothing happened as it should have. In particular, I had forgotten to take care of the invitations. I had to use my creative skills to save the situation, since asking Emilian to tell his 4 and 5-year-old kindergarten friends to “Save the date” was clearly not an option. So, I grabbed a bunch of yellow post-it notes and filled the kindergarten with notes that said something like “Emilian’s 5th Birthday celebration next week – Save the date!”. The official invitations were handed out a couple of days later by Emilian. Amen.

Finally, the day of the party arrived. Monday afternoon, exactly one week after my impetuous idea of filling Emilian’s kindergarten with yellow “Post-it” notes. The decoration was ready, Emilian’s outfit on fleek – little Spiderman in a holiday mood wearing flip flops. Spiderman piñata, tick. Spiderman-Princess table, set. Food and drinks, ready. Spiderman-cake ready to be served. It was finally time to have fun and enjoy the party.

Emilian’s friends started arriving together with their parents, and the garden started looking more packed and full by every minute. My spontaneous strategy regarding the invitation “Post-its” had worked. In fact, none of the children missed the party. It was a full house and Emilian was very happy. While the toddlers got together and played around the garden, we prepared the important stuff: The BBQ.

In the meantime, we organized the children’s treasure hunt (huge success!) and hosted some games for them to play: egg-and-spoon-run, pot hitting and musical chairs aka “going to Jerusalem”. As I am not a fan of those goodie bags (who actually invented this nonsense?) at the end of any party, the children received little gifts, e.g. bursting bubbles and candies during the games.

Then eventually came the cake. The Spiderman cake. We sang, Emilian blew the candles, he opened his birthday gifts and we all enjoyed the end of the celebration.

While Emilian sat in his little chair having his 5^th birthday Spiderman cake and chatting with his friends, I thought to myself of how fast time passes. We had been travelling Asia and Australia with a bag and a pram two years ago. He was only two and a half by then, now he’s five years old and will go to school next year. It’s crazy, the good type of craziness I guess.

Es war Ende Mai, und Emilians Geburtstag kam auf uns zu. Ich war auf der Jagd nach Spiderman- und Prinzessinnen-Dekorationen. Emilian hatte für seinen 5. Geburtstag ausdrücklich eine Spiderman-Prinzessinnen-Party gewünscht. Da liess er nicht locker. Wieder einmal war ich damit beschäftigt, zu organisieren und dafür zu sorgen, dass alles rechtzeitig fertig war … derweil das Geschäft normal weiterlief. Der ewige Spagat zwischen Arbeit und Privatleben!

Natürlich klappte nicht alles. Vor allem: Ich hatte die Einladungen vergessen. Ups! Was tun? Kurzentschlossen schnappte ich Post-it Zetteln, ging damit zum Kindergarten, und schon hingen an den Garderoben kleine Zettel mit der Notiz: “Emilian feiert seinen 5. Geburtstag – Save the date!” Offizielle Einladungen verteilte Emilian einige Tage später. Amen.

Dann kam der Montag … Genau eine Woche nach meiner spektakulären Kindergarten-Aktion. Die Dekoration war fertig, Emilians Kostüm so einigermassen: Er kam als kleiner Spiderman – in Ferienstimmung und mit Flip-Flops (sein Wunsch!). Der Spiderman-Prinzessinnen-Tisch war gerichtet, Essen und Getränke standen bereit, auch der Spiderman-Kuchen wartete auf seinen Auftritt. Die Party konnte beginnen.

Emilians Freunde kamen mit ihren Eltern. Der Garten füllte sich schnell. Wir hatten “full house”, und Emilian war sehr glücklich. Die Kinder begannen ihre Spiele; wir kümmerten uns um das Wichtigste: das Barbecue.

In der Zwischenzeit organisierten wir eine Schatzsuche (voller Erfolg!), es gab einen Eierlöffel-Lauf, es wurden Töpfe geschlagen, und wir machten uns auf die “Reise nach Jerusalem”. Ich bin kein Freund von “Goodie Bags” zum Abschied (wer nur hat diesen Blödsinn erfunden?); stattdessen erhielten die Kinder während der Spiele kleine Geschenke wie Seifenblasen und Süssigkeiten.

Und dann kam der Kuchen. Der Spiderman-Kuchen! Wir sangen, Emilian blies die Kerzen aus, er machte sich an seine Geburtstagsgeschenke, und wir alle genossen das Ende eines gelungenen Geburtstagsnachmittages … die Erwachsenen mit einem Glas Prosecco. Ja, das darf auch sein!

Während Emilian auf seinem kleinen Stuhl saß, den Spiderman-Kuchen aß und mit seinen Freunden plauderte, wurde mir plötzlich klar, wie schnell doch die Zeit vergeht. Vor nur zwei Jahren waren wir leichtbepackt durch Asien und Australien gereist. Da war Emilian erst zweieinhalb. Jetzt ist er fünf, und nächstes Jahr geht er zur Schule. Verrückt!
